It Begins

The first Shot of Jaq! Jono Bacon and Stuart Langridge explain what SoJ is all about and how it’s going to work. There’ll be two Shots of Jaq a week, on Tuesdays and Fridays, and each one is where the conversation starts, not where it finishes. So tell us what you think: leave a comment for us and the community here, or chat to us live on IRC, or email us directly!

It’s the start of a whole new adventure, and you’re here right from the beginning. Let’s go.

Good to have the two of you back on the air. Thanks for laying out in simple terms how you expect things to run. I do hope the knob gags are indeed of the highest quality!

  2. tola 24 November 2009 at 11:56 am #

    Awesome.

Twice a week? You really going to keep that up?

  3. trastle 24 November 2009 at 11:57 am #

    Been looking forward to this.

  4. sil 24 November 2009 at 11:59 am #

    tola: yep. :)

  5. Acesabe 24 November 2009 at 12:31 pm #

Less nob gags??!! – Yeah right! Hope not anyway! Bring on the next Shat Of Jok(e)!!

  6. omahn 24 November 2009 at 12:32 pm #

Good to hear you both again. Looking forward to ep2. Just one suggestion, listening through headphones Aq was noticeably quieter than Jono (amazing, yes I know!). Might be worth bumping the levels slightly for Aq.

  7. corrie206 24 November 2009 at 12:33 pm #

topic idea : to cloud or not to cloud maybe? pro’s and con’s, ect?

    • marxjohnson 24 November 2009 at 1:43 pm #

      That’d be a great topic!

It is a bit off-putting that Aq’s sound quality is noticeably poorer than Jono’s. It makes it sound like he’s being recorded over the phone, which I understand from the UUPC interview isn’t actually the case. Other than that, great teaser, I’m all up for Thursday now!

“Twice a week” “Tues 24th Nov 2009 at 4pm GMT.” cough

    Awesome listen, anyways :D

Album: “Released as a single”. Good to see the same level of ID3 consistency as LugRadio achieved. ;)

  10. bas-r 24 November 2009 at 1:27 pm #

Thanks for the intro. Looking fwd to the next shit of knob jokes!

(Btw, the sound qual needs some improvement, would be nice to actually think you’re in the same room)

  11. yibble 24 November 2009 at 1:41 pm #

Great first ’shot’ guys… Urgh, I feel like a pr0n camera-man saying that.

I’ll be tuning in, and inspecting each knob gag. Rest assured, you have an independent adjudicator on board :)

  12. ibboT 24 November 2009 at 1:58 pm #

Perhaps you could mention the topic for the next shot at the end of the current one. The listeners could do some research then too, allowing for more informed comments straight away. Looking forward to the next one.

Well I hope that nobody encountered the problems of listening to this shot that I experienced. First I tried on ‘Google Chrome unstable for Linux’ and nothing worked (that includes the ogg and the mp3). So then I tried it on firefox and could only listen to the first few minutes of the shot. I tried this 5 times with the same result. Finally, I used the mp3 on FF and I was able to hear the whole show. Great work guys…I’m craving my next shot. :D

This site definitely has issues with Chrom/ium

  14. Grantbow 24 November 2009 at 4:49 pm #

Great first shot! I am looking forward to this new adventure.

FYI, the website seems to hate my G1 phone. Attempts at downloads (ogg or mp3) say “download unsuccessful” though it worked on my laptop. Commenting via the G1 browser also failed.

  15. Neall 24 November 2009 at 6:03 pm #

Good first shot guys 0 audio quality is good too. The intro music isn’t bad either. Only thing is the lack of an RSS feed – unless I’ve missed it (still early days so no biggie).

    • derekweber 24 November 2009 at 8:54 pm #

It’s there now (bottom right of each page, thanks A+J) but I found it last night by viewing the page source.

  16. Petux 24 November 2009 at 6:23 pm #

Love the concept of this, think this could be a great way to grab hold of issues and give them a real good thrashing! I’m waiting and ready for the onslaught!

  17. Social comments and analytics for this post…

This post was mentioned on Twitter by bfrancis: First #shotofjaq is out http://shotofjaq.org/2009/11/it-begins/ – 10 min Open Source podcasts…

As a suggestion for one of your future shots, you may won’t to discuss free and open source for Windows users. I found this fantastic and beautifully well done website that presents a ton of software applications that can replace proprietary software. Check this out: http://www.opensourcewindows.org

Nice first shot! I look forward to the second. I also like the idea of mentioning the following topic in the current episode.

  20. Azrael 25 November 2009 at 12:20 am #

Great shot guys. Looking forward to more. Agree that Aq didn’t sound as ‘clean’ as Jono – but not ruining my enjoyment.

    Thanks!

  21. Derek 25 November 2009 at 12:22 am #

Now that I’ve listened to the podcast (in the car) I realise that some of you guys are really picky about your audio! Aq sounded different, yes, but it was fine! I’ve heard much, much worse (www.brainsciencepodcast.com with Jeff Hawkins, who invented the Palm Pilot so there’s a tech link, sounded awful! Excellent podcast though).

Anyway, the premise of the show sounds great and really interesting, and I’m very much looking forward to Friday’s shot.

    Thanks guys.

“Less knob gags”?? Fewer knob gags. If one is going to crude, one should at least be grammatically correct when doing so. :-D

    • Derek 25 November 2009 at 11:46 am #

      Here, here! ;o)

  23. ikt 25 November 2009 at 3:57 pm #

will be tuning in, all the best :)

  24. shirteesdotnet 25 November 2009 at 9:57 pm #

Not bad so far. I’ll tune into the next several ’shots’ and see where it goes. Sounds promising… hope you dont laugh about your email address for 3 minutes every episode. :p

    Good Luck!

  25. Mark_L 26 November 2009 at 12:30 am #

Hey I heard about this from UUPC, great idea, I love a debate!

Ideas I like: ibboT’s idea about giving the next topic to be discussed on the current show so listeners could research it and post their views.

Topics I like: corrie206’s idea of the cloud, eg. ubuntuone, google cloud etc

  26. robertpostill 26 November 2009 at 4:17 am #

OK, I have a few of questions: 1. I get the better than the news media thing but how? No seriously, what is your measure of better? 2. Can we be expecting interviews? 3. What will the end of the conversation look like, a report? A follow-up shot?

Can’t wait to see what happens :)

  27. kristizz 26 November 2009 at 2:34 pm #

Just listened to the 1st shot-what a great format for a show-can’t wait for this to get started proper

  28. jkt 27 November 2009 at 1:24 pm #

good start, audio production is top notch and its professionally done…just going on to listen to the next shot now ;) nice work :)

  29. jkt 27 November 2009 at 4:08 pm #

thinking a good topic would be google wave, its good points and bad points etc…

  30. rowinggolfer 28 November 2009 at 11:30 pm #

2 eps in, and I realise that you 2 guys have come up with a fantastic new podcasting format. This “shotcast” deserves to recognised as a groundbreaking branch of the genre. Great work, keep it up.

re jkt’s point above.. is there a way the shotofjaq community can suggest a topic for you chaps?

one last thing – a donate button please.

    • sil 29 November 2009 at 8:53 pm #

Donate button now over there in the sidebar!

  31. sil 28 November 2009 at 11:36 pm #

Rowinggolfer: suggest topics here, or by mail (see Talk To Jaq link above). Donate button: interesting concept. Would merch be better?

    • jono 29 November 2009 at 12:47 am #

I quite like the idea of a donate button and we do plan on merch down the line. :-)

  32. Chris Crisafulli 30 November 2009 at 6:44 am #

Very good for Shot!! Thanks look forward to the others.

  33. B1ackcr0w 7 December 2009 at 11:49 am #

You mentioned that the LUG Radio Knob gags were poor because they were poorly researched. What exactly is involved in researching a knob gag?

  34. Pat 11 December 2009 at 8:26 pm #

Glad to hear a new podcast from you guys. 10 minutes is way too short IMHO but it’s your show. Good luck with it.

  35. winkleink 15 December 2009 at 2:29 pm #

Still trying to decide if I like the intro music. I think it’s the manic drum machine bit in the middle, it sounds out of time in my brain.

I’ll just have to see if it grows or grates on me over time.
