Talking of SOJ not working on Chrome, it’s not working properly on my laptop (Ubuntu/FF)… The scrolly bar hits the right hand side in 30 seconds, but fortunately the sound keeps playing, so I can still get my Shot of Jaq goodness…
Phew…
I’d buy these glasses.
Aq sound much better with his new microphone.
Yay!
I concur completely. It’s nice, isn’t it?
I agree, I think his mic sounds much better. I still need to do some better EQing and compression to squeeze some more goodness out.
has an image in his mind of an “Aq” toothpaste tube
+1, I don’t like being an audio snob, but I find it easier to concentrate on the content if i’m not irritated by the quality. Thx for spending the money!
I never even thought about the fact that a better audio quality will make it easier to concentrate. Good stuff!
The higher quality audio does make it a lot nicer to listen to, no clipping or distortion.
i was about to suggest brainstorm before jono mentioned it for the suggestion box. i do like the idea of a suggestion thing.
Bitching can be provided upon request.
Love the pod cast, heard about it from floss weckly and have listened to the whole `backlog’ of shows. Which thankfully didn’t take the best part of two weeks of solid listing, unlike Security Now or floss when I originally started listing to those:).
Regarding the comment about browsers pre-loading audio, its not happening here however I am using NoScript.
Additionally, DEB or packages for any package manager should only be treated as safe unless they come from a moderated, centralised repository.
Thanks for the kind words, Hessiess, and thanks for joining the conversation!
Oh, if I didn’t mention it before, the issue with the browser grabbing the audio is fixed. Thankyou chaps!
It’s a great show so far, keep it up! The picture of shot glasses is pretty sweet (future merchandising opportunity?).
I think the security issue is important one but not very much talked about as it should be. The posting of malicious packages or shell commands worries me because it undermines the trust in the community that is essential to FOSS. You should definitely do a show on it.
Thanks for the kind words, and Shot Of Jaq merch is certainly on the horizon.

Bot Win!
However, the bot doesn’t know the difference between comments including spam and comments not including spam. Bot fail. You are not 1000th
Aq built a framework? Another fucking framework?
It’s a real pleasure hearing the two of you talking again.
Much less so this time. LugRadio.org was entirely custom from the ground up. ShotOfJaq.org is Wordpress, mostly, and when I’ve written additional stuff I’ve tried to make it WP plugins rather than just hacking the theme or whatever…
To clarify some, I was thinking back to a LugRadio episode in which you yourself complained that all Linux gaming ever does is make another framework.
I’ve been meaning to ask: your personal website, is it just a custom site these days? It looks like it.
Also, are both of you in the U.S. these days, or are you doing this stuff over Skype, or are you even (gasp) both in England?
Personal website uses thort, a blogging engine based on CouchDB, so I can experiment with Couch.
Jono’s in the US; I’m in England. We record ourselves locally, and simultaneously use Skype (so we can hear what one another are saying).
Where is the Ogg feed?
See “Get Jaq Delivered”, bottom of the page.
Shareware isn’t dead. See e.g. the Android Store – lots of apps have partly-crippled free versions and full-function pay versions. And that’s the shareware model, right?
BTW, I like Aq’s new improved vocal quality.

Good argument. I hadn’t quite equated the two in my mind, because they’re not presented as one app, they’re presented as two, but you’re quite right. Interesting. I need to mentally assimilate this concept into my view of software now
I think sshareware is alive and kicking in the Windows app world as well. I did a quick search on download.com, and that found over 52000 apps that were free to try but required a payment to licence longer term.

Regarding the purpose of Shot Of Jaq in starting a conversation, one thing which I often want to do is respond to comments made by one of you during the podcast. This would be very easy if part of the comment stream was a transcript of your converstation (maybe broken into sentences or ‘points’ somehow). I realise this is hard to do, I’m not suggesting you have to type it in (voice recognition anyone?). But it would be cool.
This is an interesting idea, thanks for sharing! Maybe we could add a bunch of comments kicking off discussions around some of the key points? Would you be interested in helping with this?
Yes. Yes, I would. What would work best for you folks?
Yes, I’d contribute to some transcript, but it would have to be a bit ad-hoc – my time is unreliable (comes with having a 2-year-old). Sounds like .james below might be a better bet… I’ll just move the conversation along for now…
Very funny dudes, ill do a blog about soq soon.
“I would interested to hear more thoughts from the community if that is actually a good idea or not, if you want suggestions to be public…” – Aq (Approximate Quote) I love the idea. Re Suggestions being public or not: that is the whole idea… People voting entries up or down… If someone does not want their suggestion to be public then they can just e-mail you guys as they would have done before.
So yes, the topic suggestion ranking system and the possibility of numbered shows are both great. Your hard work is massively appreciated.
Oh, and I also like the slightly longer length of this show this time.
