Merging Voice and Text Discussion Threads
I love the way that ShotOfJaq encourages listeners to participate in the discussion of the topic. However, I do find it frustrating that you end up trying to follow a conversation that is taking place in two entirely different types of media:
Recordings of voices that must be listened to
Typed commentary which must be read
In practice this means that I listen to the audio at a time which is convenient for listening (for me normally as I cycle my bike). Often this is not a time at which it is convenient to read the discussion thread or type my own comments. I only occasionally participate in the discussion threads because it is only feasible for me to read other comments and type my own thoughts when I am next sitting at a PC screen (by which time I have probably forgotten about the topic being discussed in the audio).
In this day and age it should be possible to merge the two communication modes e.g:
- Text to speech has now reached the stage where it should be trivially easy to develop a system which would automatically produce an audio download of all of the written comments read by a computer voice. This would mean that instead of just downloading Jono and Aq talking I would download their "shot" and all of the comments left so far - this might make me more likely to join in the discussion.
- The current state of speech to text software is not quite as advanced. However, it would be an interesting experiment to see if we could semi-automatically produce a transcript of each shot so that people who don't like listening could instead join the discussion my reading a transcript of the shot and then reading the typed in comments.
I am not expert in automated telephone services, but a little hacking about on the voxeo site leads me to believe that it would be relatively easy to implement a system where people could phone into ShotOfJaq (using SIP, Skype or a traditional phone) and specify if they wanted to listen to the latest episode and its discussion thread or leave a recorded comment using voice commands and/or keys on their keypad.
What do others think of this idea? I would be willing to help implement such a system (but lack the time and/or expertise to do all the work myself).
